Sunscreens have recently become a controversial subject, with regard to what goes into them, but former Victoria's Secret supermodel Gisele Bundchen added fuel to the fire on Friday February 4, 2011, when she allegedly described sunscreens as “poison.” However, Gisele Bundchen has since then posted on her blog what she meant when she made the remark.
Gisele Bundchen's recent remark over sunscreen incensed skin cancer experts; Gisele Bundchen stated:
The response from Dolival Loao, head of dermatology at the Brazil National Cancer Institute was:
“This is not any poison, when a public person makes a statement like this, it creates confusion.”
Gisele Bundchen later posted on her blog:
“I would like to clarify the misunderstanding about the use of sunblock. I do use sunblock but also I try my best not to be exposed to the sun when it is too strong. My line of skincare products are all natural and do not contain SPF. I feel we all need to pay more attention to what we are putting on our skin. I definitely know the importance of using sunscreen and I try to look for more natural options.”
Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. Until recently, many young women were unaware about the dangers of spending long periods of time in the sun without some form of protection, believing that a “tan” was a sign of “health.” However, campaigns such as “The Protect The Skin You're In”, recently promoted by Victoria's Secret model Marisa Miller, try to make people more aware of the dangers of skin cancer and promote the importance of protecting your skin from the harmful rays of the sun.
